The Mystery of the Café
My name is Phineas Morrow, a few weeks ago in a café called Date, there was a crime. I’m telling you this, because I was the owner of the café until it was closed because of the homicide. This is what happened:
One morning, when the café hadn’t opened yet, the bell rang. It was Mugsy Morrow my best client and my own brother. John, one of the waiters, opened the door while he turned the closed signal to an open one.
Mugsy came in with an enthusiastic smile. He thanked John, and sat at a table. The tables weren’t ready, so John started to prepare it while Morrow read the morning menu. He asked for a cup of tea.
Another two clients came in, the Woontys. The Woontys was a couple who came from Europe and had always hated the Americans. Two minutes later, William Charity came in.
An explosion was heard in the café; we all glanced at the ceiling and we saw a hole on the roof. It was a bullet hole. After that, I ran to the kitchen and heard another noise, but it sounded a bit lighter.
I finally got the courage I needed to go and see what was happening, and I peered through the keyhole to see two shapes dressed in dark running out of the door. I first wanted to call the police, but I couldn’t. I found something that made me think twice.
My brother was lying on the floor! Dead! I called the police who came with detective Philip K. Polk who came with his helper, Jennifer Jenkings.
After three hours of checking the ceiling, the detective asked me who were in the café during the homicide and I talked to him about William Charity, of the Woontys who hated the Americans and about John, the waiter. He looked at his watch and finally said the Woontys were the criminals. He knew it was a two-people crime. He explained that one of the criminals had shot at the roof so everyone would ran out of Date and they wouldn’t see them murdering Morrow.
After that, the Woontys were put in prison and Date was closed.
