The Gold Coin
There was nothing about Claire or her coin collection that you found suspicious. When you left Claire's house you decided to return to Mr. Terry's store to keep him informed of how far you've reached in the investigation. As you approach you see Kelly leaving the store and you decide to follow her. She stops at a costume rental store and returns a black Halloween Costume.
Instinctively you think you need more information so you walk up to her and ask her if she's looking forward to her trip to Hawaii knowing that this would only be possible if she had the coin. She looks down at the floor and replies nervously, "we still can't afford it." You are tempted to interrogate her with endless questions but realise that it is too early in your investigation and she would tell Mr. Terry. You pretend to leave but continue to follow her. Kelly was on her way to a travel agency which seemed unusual because it would normally be closed by 7pm. It is now 7.30pm and the lights are still on so you see Kelly enter the travel agency and the travel agent opens the door for her and anxiously hands her an envelope which she accepts and hides rapidly in her pocket. Your confidence grows because you have the evidence which is leading you to discover the mystery of the gold coin.
You continue to follow Kelly even though her walking pace speeds up but eventually you decide that it is time to go home and rest.
The next day you meet Lancy and you explain to him what you saw yesterday. He finds it hard to believe that Kelly could be a thief but trusts your observations.
When you return to the coin store the same day you are astonished to see that Kelly is standing in front of Mr. Terry about to open the envelope. You decide to enter the store when Kelly points to the back of the store and they both move in that direction. You begin to feel very nervous and wonder if they will hear your heavy breathing as you hide under a table. Suddenly you hear Mr Terry ask in a very loud voice how Kelly was able to buy two air tickets to Hawaii. She confesses to him not knowing that you are recording every word and proof of Mr. Terry's disappointment. You save the evidence in a tape recorder which you give to the police.
