Jason Drew
The murder at the café
Let me introduce myself, I’m Jason Drew. You might know me as Nancy’s brother. Well, now let’s talk about me, the real detective of the family. I wanted to solve a really important mystery to prove I am better than my sister. I’m twelve years old, but the age doesn’t matter when you are a detective. I’m tall and blonde.
I arrived at the scene of the crime when Martha, the owner of the café, was telling the police what had happened. I stood next to them and took note of everything they said. There had been a murder. The victim had been Mugsy Morrow, a well known gangster and criminal. The murderer had leaned against the wall while firing at point-blank range. His gloved right hand had left a mark on the wall and could be clearly seen. Morrow had walked into the café just before nine o’clock and been shot by one of the customers.
The customers were:
Austin, Becky, Carol and Derek. Austin was Martha’s favourite client, he seemed innocent to me. Becky had been in jail two years ago because she was seen being aggressive to a banker. Carol seemed nervous since she had arrived to the café. Derek had been once or twice in the café but had never ordered anything, he seemed to be looking for something.
I decided to start investigating the scene of the crime. I spread some special powder all over the floor. There were three types of footprints. One were Martha’s and went to the kitchen. From Austin’s seat there also were some footprints that arrived to the kitchen. Martha told me Austin always went to help her wash the dishes. That’s when I took Austin out of my list suspects, because he was at the kitchen when the crime was committed. The footprints that were left came from Carol´s seat and led to the outside. The footprints past near the wall were the gloved hand was detected. She seemed very suspect to me but I still couldn’t prove anything. After that I asked Martha if she still had the bills of those four clients. She gave them to me and I started investigating them. Suddenly I realised that Becky was innocent because she had already paid and gone away when Mugsy Morrow was killed. That left me only two suspects, Carol and Derek. I kept on looking for clues in the café.
At that precise moment it was when I noticed that there was a cigarette thrown on the floor next to Carol’s footprints and to the hand on the wall. That was the only clue I needed to prove that Carol was the murderer. I had only one doubt… Why was Derek sitting with her? Were there accomplices? That’s when it came to my mind. Carol and Derek Anderson!!! The famous murderers of Fifth Avenue. I told the police everything, and they told me to leave it in their hands. They would catch them and put them to jail.
Some days later when I received the New York Times I saw my face in the cover. ¨Then I read the title out loud. “Another great detective in the Drew family”. I was so excited, I had solved the mystery. Minutes later I received a call from Nancy. She told me she had been to the city and had read the newspaper. Now we could work together!!!
Well done girls! Miss Ale
